hmmm.....let's start with Hymn # 101

Yeah I’ve come to know the wish list of my father
I’ve come to know the shipwrecks where he wished
I’ve come to wish aloud among the over dressed crowd
Come to witness now the sinking of the ship
Throwing pennies from the sea top next to it
And I’ve come to roam the forest past the village
With a dozen lazy horses in my cart
I’ve come here to get high,
To do more than just get by.
I’ve come to test the timbre of my heart
Oh, I’ve come to test the timbre of my heart
And I’ve come to be untroubled in my seeking
And I’ve come to see that nothing is for naught
I’ve come to reach out blind
to reach forward and behind
For the more I seek the more I’m sought
Yeah, the more I seek the more I’m sought.

And I’ve come to meet the sheriff and his posse
To offer him the broadside of my jaw
I’ve come here to get broke
Then maybe bum a smoke
We’ll go drinking two towns over after all
Oh, we’ll go drinking two towns over after all.

And I’ve come to meet the legendary takers
I’ve only come to ask them for a lot
Oh they say I come with less
than I should rightfully posses
I say the more I buy the more I’m bought
And the more I’m bought the less I cost
And I’ve come to take their servants and their surplus
And I’ve come to take their raincoats and their speed
I’ve come to get my fill
To ransack and spill
I’ve come to take the harvest for the seed
I’ve come to take the harvest for the seed

And I’ve come to know the manger that you sleep in
I’ve come to be the stranger that you keep
I’ve come from down the road
And my footsteps never slowed
Before we met, I knew we’d meet
Before we met, I knew we’d meet

And I’ve come here to ignore your cries and heartaches
I’ve come to closely listen to you sing
I’ve come here to insist
That I leave here with a kiss
I‘ve come to say exactly what I mean
and I mean so many things.

And you’ve come to know me stubborn as a butcher
and you’ve come to know me thankless as a guest
but will you recognize my face when gods awful grace
strips me of my jacket and my vest
and reveals all the treasure in my chest

Where is this from? Is it official? I always thought he sang "I've come to test the TIMBER of my heart", instead of timbre. I guess either could be interesting.

I think I've lost count on how many times I've listened to this song. :)

I co-host a talk show where we discuss Hymn 101:
http://unbelievablefaith.com/2009/10/14/episode-026-the-theology-of-joe-pugs-hymn-101/

If you wish to go right to the discussion of the song, it starts at 14:30.

Feedback welcome!

Any corrections would be appreciated. enjoy :)

Speak plainly Diana
There’s nothing to understand
Yes, there’s mysteries in the basement
But there’s comic books upstairs
And there’s a wrecking ball in the front yard
But there’s blueprints on the couch
Speak plainly to me Diana
We’ll build ourselves a house ... Said

There’s no safety Diana
And there’s nobody to blame
Even daylight will surprise you
Even dreams will end the same

So when there’s too much to remember
And you remember me
Speak plainly to me Diana
We’re swimming to the sea ... Said

I don’t mind riding around (x8)

Come lately Diana and quit what’s got you down
Steal from the tallest cabinet and make your favorite sound
And when there’s too much to get rid of and you get rid of me
Speak plainly to me Diana there’s nothing you must be... Said

I don’t mind riding around (x3)
I don’t mind

Bridge

I don’t mind riding around (x7)
I don’t mind

Thanks for getting things started! In "Hymn #101" I hear one line differently than what nycsarah has - in the Daytrotter session, Joe sings, "I've come to trade the harvest for the seed", which seems more in line with the rest of the brilliant lyrics. Along those same lines, I believe it would be "timbre" and not "timber" in the earlier verse.

Here are the lyrics for the full, In the meantime E.P. with the tabs I had with me. More to come.

feel free to make corrections

Dodging the Wind:

See the sun set down
don't leave the avenue
see that boy walk into town
watch him leave on through

Chorus
I've been running been ducking been dodging the wind
I've been running been ducking been dodging the wind
every city I've found, every place that i get
tries to blow me around, they aint blown me down yet
I've been running been ducking been dodging the wind

call that boy by his name
smile as he turns and he waves
dont you shed a tear, as he walks way from here
he'll come, but he ain't known to stay

Chorus

by the window look at the moon
window is coming on soon
when you think of the kid who left when he did
he too will be thinking of you

Chorus

In the Meantime:

I'm saving all my nickels and half of every dime
im washing all the blankets, god knows that im trying
I fixed the gate, we will find each other so they say
in the meantime, Im lonesome while i wait

I'm lying to my family, of who im thinking bout
i had another woman, somehow she found out
she always knew, we'll be honest with each other me and you
in the meantime, ill break a heart or two

now im selling saws and hammers for half of what they are worth
im dreaming for a living, i got no time for work
it's getting hard, one day we will never be apart
in the meantime I'm wondering where you are

now im burning sheets of plywood, i pryed up off the floor
the house is out of lumber, at least for now im warm, for now im warm
we'll be warm beneath the carolina moon
in the meantime i should find another room

im drinking from the faucet, im lucky when i sleep
im sleeping in the closet, im scared of the police
what should i do? one day you will be my reason too
in the meantime ill just be passing through

Lock the door christina:
Capo 4 (chords relative to capo)

C--------------------G
Who's that by your front door?
--------------------C
by first light and last
------------------- F(bar)------------G----------------C
whose that man heart in hand sleeping in your grasp
F (high)----------------G-------------- C----C/B---Am
in a coat of young frustration, with unfed appe-tite
---------F (high)---------------G-------------------------C
lock the door christina, im standing on your porch tonight

whose that by your front door, we all thought he died
whose that man knee deep in sand, waiting on the tide
with an atlas and a ladder, anointed from the height
lock the door christina im standing on your porch tonight

who else ever cared? who else ever tried?
whose that man come to stand right by your crying side?
courageless but honest, my empty arms invite
lock your door christina, im standing on your porch tonight

destined to misuse you, determined to do you right
lock the door christina, repeat,
better lock that door christina, im standing on your porch tonight

Not sure the key of the harmonica

A Thousand Men

See Thomas Jefferson, on the eve of bunker hill
Writing Words to die for, writing sentences to kill
They've come to paint his portrait, so he grabs a chair and sits
as the surgeon orders cotton, for a thousand tourniquets

For god and country, for us and them
every good idea kills at least a thousand men
at least a thousand men

See the able bodied christina, in a dark and savage land
telling all those who will listen
that god was once a man
through needles eyes so narrow, he will lead them 4 x 4
he's got 900 shackles, he needs at least 100 more

A thousand men, a thousand men
every good idea kills at least a thousand men
at least a thousand men

See the able bodied student, in his laboratory coat,
whispering calculations like prayers stuck in his throat
soon he will discover some flawless medicine
but right now he needs and oven that holds at least a thousand men

some are the means, some are the ends
every good idea killsa at least a thousand men
at least a thousand men

1001, 1001, every man i know thinks that he's 1001
909, his day is done, every man i know thinks that hes 1001
I know im 1001.

Black Eyed Susan

Black eyed susan, I aint gunna look your way no more
Oh, black eyed susan, I aint gunna look your way more
no need to ask about babe, i know what i was looking for

well your blue blood runs like its got some important place to be
i said your blue blood runs like its got some important place to be
you say im important baby, why your blood always running from me?

you got a miracle master, he is so naked and wise
i heard you got a miracle master, he is so naked and wise
dont you feel so new with your old time 'ligion in disguise

well the good lord gave me peaches and the good lord gave me bread
well the good lord gave me peaches and the good lord gave me bread
the day he gave me you susan i wish he would have rested instead

Oh im in love im in love and I dont know what it is I should do?
should i take my chances and become another one of your fools?
oh they call you the scene of the crime, now their collecting their clues
they dont wanna love you babe, they'd rather make a riddle out of you

Enjoy. More tabs/lyrics to come

Not So Sure

Capo 4 (chords relative)

Intro

C------------------------------------------------------------
there was a time when i heard ya, calling out my name
F----------------------------C-----------G
but these days im not so sure
-----------C----------------------------G------------------Am---------------------
when the room when dark and your voice was gone i heard you all the same
F------------------------------C---------G
but these things im not so sure

(same)
I know i could remember your bedroom and your touch
but these things im not so sure
Definitly was a word I used far too much
cuz these things im not so sure

F------------------------C--------
I bummed expensive cigarettes
F-------------------------C----C/B
i wrote john steinbecks books
--Am---------------------G------------------F--------------------C
i undressed someones daughter and complained about her looks
F------------------------------------------------------C----C/B-----
stealing was so easy then, and I wish that it still were
----------Am-----------G--------------------F------------------------C------G
now as i pick my own pocket i know that these things im not so sure

the church was my kitchen, the world was my church
but these things im not so sure
the choirs i would listen, through choirs i would search
but these things im not so sure

I sacrificed my sister, i prayed my own soul to keep
i told my dying father that a man should never weep

breathing was so easy then, i wish that it still were
now as the breeze just makes me colder, i know that these things im not so sure
So if you see my tripping, ive forgotten how to walk
and i spend my days wishing after her
my steps are without rhythm and her name is drawn in chaulk
cuz these things im not so sure

i drank my wine for breakfast, every morning i was born
in the black electric winter, my back still is warm
sleeping was so easy then, i wish that it still were
now in my sleepless bedroom, i know that these things, im not so sure

CALL IT WHAT YOU WILL
C-----------------G----------------C
Silver cans and bronze coloured dirt
C-----------------G----------------C
Silver cans and bronze coloured dirt
Am------------------------------C------------G----
things end so soon neath the parking lot moon
F----------------G-----------------C
Silver cans and bronze coloured dirt

C---------G-----------C--------------------------------------F
She said lets call it quits, lets not call it the end of the world
------------------G------------------------------------------C-----G-----C
call it what you will, im heartbroken still words are just words

I DO MY FATHERS DRUGS

G---------------------------C-------------Em---------------------
when the party starts on sunday, and christmas starts in june
G-------------------------C-----------------Em------------C----
when no one minds ive just arrived and ill be leaving soon
----G----------------------C-----------Em----------------
if i return with eyes half open, dont ask me where i was
G--------D-------G
i do my fathers drugs

when every revolution is sponsored by the state
theres no bravery in being asked and turning down the case
if you see me with a rifle, dont ask me what its for
i fight my fathers wars

when hunger strikes are fashion and freedom is routine
when all the streets in cleveland are named for martin luther king
if you see me at the protest, you'll notice that i drag
i burn my fathers flag

repeat verse 1
